Trash & Waste Guidelines for Your Stay

To help keep the Smoky Mountains clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone, please follow these important trash and waste guidelines during your stay.

🐻 Protect Wildlife — Proper Trash Handling Is Critical

  • All trash must be securely bagged and placed in the bear-proof containers located outside.
  • Absolutely NO trash, food, snacks, or wrappers may be left outside at any time.
  • Even small food items can attract bears, raccoons, and other wildlife.

Failure to follow these rules can create dangerous situations for both guests and animals.

🧹 Trash Removal During Your Stay

  • Trash will be removed by our cleaning team after your departure.
  • If you need interim trash pickup, please notify us.
  • We may be able to arrange pickup for an additional fee, but it is not guaranteed.

♻️ How Trash Is Handled in Sevier County

Trash in Sevier County is managed by Sevier Solid Waste, Inc. (SSWI), which operates the largest municipal solid waste composting facility in the United States.

  • About 60% of daily waste (including food waste and paper) is converted into high-quality compost.
  • The remaining waste is safely landfilled.

This environmentally responsible system helps protect the beauty of the Smoky Mountains.
