Skiing & Snowboarding Near the Smoky Mountains

  • Posted on
Many visitors are surprised to discover that you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding during a Smoky Mountain vacation. While the Southeast doesn't receive the massive snowfall of the Rockies, several nearby ski resorts combine higher elevations with advanced snowmaking to provide excellent winter recreation throughout much of the season.
Whether you're staying at one of our Tennessee vacation rentals or planning a future getaway to our upcoming Blue Mountain Escape in Western North Carolina, you'll find several ski areas within driving distance.

Ober Mountain - Gatlinburg, Tennessee

For guests staying in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, or Sevierville, Ober Mountain is the closest place to ski or snowboard. Located above downtown Gatlinburg, Ober offers skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, an alpine slide, ice skating, scenic chairlift rides, shopping, and dining.

Ober relies heavily on modern snowmaking equipment, allowing the resort to open even when Mother Nature doesn't fully cooperate. However, ski conditions remain highly dependent on winter weather. Warm temperatures can limit the number of trails that are open, while extended cold periods allow snowmaking crews to cover much more of the mountain.

Before making plans, always check Ober's current snow report and trail status.

Ober is an excellent choice for beginners, families, and anyone wanting to spend a few hours on the slopes without venturing far from the Smokies.

Cataloochee Ski Area - Maggie Valley, North Carolina

If Ober has limited terrain or you're looking for a larger skiing experience, Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley is typically the next best option.

From our Tennessee cabins, the drive is generally 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your route. Keep in mind that US Highway 441 through Great Smoky Mountains National Park frequently closes during winter storms. When that happens, you'll need to drive around the park, increasing travel time.

  • Five lifts

  • Ski and snowboard lessons

  • Terrain suitable for beginners through advanced skiers

Because of its higher elevation and excellent snowmaking system, Cataloochee often enjoys more reliable skiing conditions than Ober Mountain.

Located just over 2 hours from Blue Mountain Escape, Sugar Mountain sits at more than 5,300 feet above sea level. The higher elevation generally brings colder temperatures and more natural snowfall than the Smoky Mountains while also supporting an extensive snowmaking system.

Sugar Mountain features:

  • Longer ski runs
  • Terrain parks
  • Snowboarding
  • Snow tubing
  • Ice skating
  • Lessons and rentals

Beech Mountain Resort

Only a few miles from Sugar Mountain is Beech Mountain Resort, the highest ski area in the eastern United States, with a summit elevation exceeding 5,500 feet.
